- Annotations help keep us from remembering only what resonates with our schema (those things we do remember, because they resonate with us).
- They keep us from going down a rabbit hole
- They help us "process" and understand what we read
- They also help us think about our thinking (metacognition)

Annotations
Do you ever read something and get to the end and think..."What did I just read?"
Annotations Can help!
Annotations force us to stop and decipher what we are reading
- Annotations help keep us from remembering only what resonates with our schema (those things we do remember, because they resonate with us).
- They keep us from going down a rabbit hole
- They help us "process" and understand what we read
- They also help us think about our thinking (metacognition)

Highlight or Note
- Talk to the text-if you can connect to something, write it down.
- If you think something is significant underline it
- If an idea repeats, highlight it.
- Develop your own system.
- But do not simply rewrite what is already written
- Ask "What's the Point": What is the author trying to tell me?
- Annotations help us determine the purpose (PIE)
WTP?
Annotations are meant to help you break down the text and comprehend what you read
Annotations 101
How do you annotate?
Annotation demonstrates you talking to the text to gain a better understanding
Communication is a two way street-think about it, it takes two to achieve effective communication and text is a way we communicate
- Dates
- Significant information
- Vocabulary
- Questions
Do not rewrite text-it is meaningless
Remember
Annotations
Annotations are especially important when reading dull or difficult text
The MOST important thing to remember:
- The key to effective annotation is WTP? What's the point?
- Read a paragraph or a section and ask yourself, "what is the point they are trying to make?"
- It is important to summarize this in 5-7 words-KISS Keep It Simple, Sam
Annotations force us to stop and process what we have read.
If someone gave you a bunch of information, you wouldn't retain it-so you stop, ask questions, take notes, and clarify understanding
Chunk the text
Ask your self What's the point?
If you don't know
Read it again
If you are still unsure, look for the golden line.
Notice the text is chunked and WTP is noted. This is key!
They are patronizing her.
They are giving her a hard time They also seem to be fighting about land..
They are giving her a hard time about a relationship
Something is going on that seems odd and uncomfortable
WTP?
Example
Write an awesome title
Important dates
1. Chunk the text 2. Determine WTP? 3. If you don't know, read it again. 4. Highlight anything that resonates with you, including connections, words, motifs, dates 5. If you read the text again and are still unsure, find the golden line-one line of text you do understand. 6. Focus on what you do know, not what you don't know. 7. Remember, with nonfiction, you can usually determine the point the author is making in the first and or last sentence of each paragraph.
