Initially, Shakespeare wrote light comedies, English history plays and Renaissance-style tragedies. In 1594, he was already one of the leading members of the best company of the time, the Lord Chamberlain, known from 1603 as the Royal Company, the most important group to occupy the Globe Theatre. They date from this period:

Shakespeare's art comprises 37 plays, 2 long poems and 154 sonnets, probably written between 1590 and 1613, as well as several passages in verse.
His plays comprise 17 comedies, 10 dramas and 10 tragedies that portray English society during three centuries of its evolution.
His two narrative poems are "Venus and Adonis" (1593), based on Ovid, and "Lucrezia" (1594), based on Titus Livius, typically Renaissance works dedicated to his protector Henry Wriotherly, Earl of Chamberlain.

William Shakespeare's influence extends from theatre to English literature. Widely regarded as the greatest playwright in the English language and the world, Shakespeare transformed English theatre and, arguably, theatrical visions across the planet, pushing the boundaries and expectations of what could be achieved through characterisation, story, language and genres. Shakespeare's texts have also influenced a large number of novelists and poets over the years.
