The Plot

Who Is Jane Austen?

Historical Comparisons

who is Jane austen?

Jane Austen was an English novelist who revolutionized the role of the novel in the literature of her time and also preempted a whole new era of English literature: the Victorian Era. Some of her work were turned into succesful movies, like Pride and Prejudice and Emma, and many more inspired movies and theatrical adaptations. Even her life was made into a movie: Becoming Jane, a free interpretation of this great writer's life.

Becoming jane: the plot

The film explores a fictionalized romance between Jane Austen and Tom Lefroy, an Irishman who becomes her love interest. Set against the backdrop of rural England, the story delves into the societal constraints and expectations placed upon women of Austen's time, particularly regarding marriage and social status. As Jane and Tom's relationship develops, they face obstacles stemming from their differing social backgrounds and family expectations. This experience will lead Jane to write Pride and Prejudice.

The influence on the books The moral of this story implies that this romantic experience inspired Jane's works, leading her to write her best works.

The influence on the books From the few information we have on Austen's life, we know that her writing passion had been ignited by her family, that made her develop a huge sensibility to what happened around her.

Historical comparisons: the life

Love Interests In Becoming Jane, the love story beetwen the famous writer and Lefroy represent the core of the story, centred on this impossible love.

Historical comparisons: the life

Becoming jane or jane becoming?

If we look closely and we analise the characters present in the movie, along with a study of some of Austen's works, we will see some parallelism:

  • The stubborn heroine that won't let anyone control her emerges from the movie being nothing but Jane herself;
  • The rude and arrogant gentleman that we see portayed as Lefroy isn't new, as the vast majority of Austen's male main characters have the same characteristic.

To these two we could add the rich old man, present for example in Lady Susan, around whom a family is built. All these similarities are "explained" in the film, when we see that the events lead to the writing of Pride and Prejudice, but still there is a question that arises around the film:

the end

Anne Hathaway as Jane Austen

The movie

"Becoming Jane" came out in 2007, meeting a disappointing response from both the public and critics: while Anne Hathaway's performance was unanimosly depicted as a triumph, the film itself was valued as a mediocre biopic. What really disappointed was a lack of focus on Austen, who stands out as nothing more than a mixture of some of her characters, without any newess.
