The top bun represents the Epidermis. The epidermis is comprised of 5 different layers including the stratum basale, stratum spinosum, stratum granulosum, stratum lucidum, and the stratum corneum. The epidermis protects the body from the external environment and each layer carries out a different process.

The sesame seeds represent the keratinocytes. They are tiny cells located in the basal layer of the epidermis (stratum basale). They play an essential role in the protection of the body as they prevent foreign substances from entering the body, while minimizing the loss of moisture, heat, and other constituents.

The meat in the middle represents the Dermis. The dermis is the middle layer of skin in between the epidermis and hypodermis. The dermis supports and protects the skin and deeper layers. It assists in thermoregulation and aids in sensation.

The peppers represent the hair. Hair is located in the top two layers of skin with the hair follicle in the dermis and the hair shaft sticking out of the skin. The hair increases sensory function, mechanically protects the skin, and aids in regulating body temperature.

The sauce represents the sebaceous glands. They are microscopic glands found in your hair follicles. It secretes sebum, an oily substance. Sebum protects your skin from drying out.

The cheese represents the sudoriferous glands. They are small tubular structures located all around the skin. There are two types of sudoriferous glands. The Eccrine glands are found in most places around the body and the Apocrine glands are found in armpits and groinal regions. They produce sweat to help control body temperature.

The bacon represents the blood vessels. Blood vessels are located throughout the body, but in the skin, they are found in the dermis. Blood vessels carry blood around the body. Arteries, veins, and capillaries are the 3 types of blood vessels found in the body.

The pickles represent melanocytes. Melanocytes are cells that are located in the skin and eyes that produce a pigment called melanin. The pigment that melanocytes create determines your skin color as well as your eye color.

The onions represent Merkel cells. Merkel cells are a special type of cell found in the dermis, below the epidermis. These cells are close to nerve endings that receive the sensation of touch, so Merkel cells aid in touch sensations.

The tomatoes represent Langerhans cells. They are cells found in the dermis and epidermis and they are derived from bone marrow. They work for the immune system by acting as immune system sentinels.

The lettuce represents touch receptors. Touch receptors are found in all layers of the skin. They detect stimuli on the skin and alert the body about a touch sensation.

The bottom bun represents the hypodermis. It is located deep in the dermis and is also called subcutaneous fascia. It is the deepest layer of skin and contains adipose tissues. The hypodermis stores energy, connects the dermis layer of your skin to your muscles and bones, insulates your body, and protects your body from harm.
