In this lesson, you are going to walk in Darwin's footsteps to make observations and develop a hypothesis to explain the things you see.Start wtih the introduction information to learn about the different finch populations. Then analyze the dramatic change data to guide your exploration and development of a hypothesis.

Explanation

Severe Drought in 1977

The drought had dramatic impacts on the medium ground finch population with half of the 100 tagged finches dieing in the first year.

large ground finchG.magnirostris

The drought meant that there was no rain fall for long periods of time. The plant population suffered. The plants that were able to survive, did NOT have enough water to produce many seeds.

Competition

Your task it to develop a claim, evidence, reasoning statement that describes why the population changed over such a short period of time.

This data shows the beak depth of the finch population on the galapagos island, Daphne Major in 1976 and 1978. What do you notice?

What happened!?

The data presented here is specific to the medium ground finch population. 100 medium ground finches were tagged and monitored over a 6 year period.

Why were so many medium ground finches dying in 1977?Be sure to explore the data found in this resource so your able to use evidence to justify your claim.
