5th-6th grade readingIntroduction to Literary GenresAbby Smutny

Directions & Objective

  • The purpose of this activity is to explore common book genres using an interactive bookshelf! Your objective is to be able to understand and describe each genre.

  • On the interactive bookshelf, you will find an array of books. There are eight buttons for you to click on, which will reveal the information about the genre of each book.

  • You will take notes of the name and definition of each genre, including one example. This can be an example from the slide, or one of your own.

  • Happy learning!

This is what the interactive elements will look like!

A romance book is a fiction story that primarily focuses on the romantic relationship and love between two characters. Romance can be mixed with other genres. Some examples of romance books include Romeo and Juliet, The Notebook, and Jane Eyre.

Fantasy and Science Fiction Here, you will find two videos. Make sure you watch both! Then, answer these questions in your notebook: 1. What makes fantasy different from other kinds of fiction? 2. What makes sci-fi different from other kinds of fiction?

Biography, Autobiography, & Memoir:

All of these tell a nonfiction story about a real person. But how do we tell the difference? Click the books below to see what makes each one unique.
