BACKGROUND:

Early life: Born on December 28, 1856, in Staunton, Virginia, was the 28th President of the United States. His early life and upbringing significantly influenced his later achievements and ideals, Wilson’s father, Joseph Ruggles Wilson, was a Presbyterian minister who had moved from Ohio to Virginia. His mother, Janet Woodrow, was the daughter of a Presbyterian minister and had been born in England to Scottish parents. Interestingly, Wilson was the only U.S. president to have a foreign-born parent. Formal education: Wilson graduated from Princeton (then known as the College of New Jersey) in 1879. Later, he attended the University of Virginia Law School. After earning a Ph.D. in political science from Johns Hopkins University, Wilson taught at various schools before becoming the president of Princeton University. Political career leading up to running for President: In 1910, Wilson was elected as the Governor of New Jersey. His progressive policies, including labor reforms and corporate regulation, garnered attention. The 1912 presidential election was pivotal. Wilson ran as the Democratic candidate against incumbent President William Howard Taft (Republican) and former President Theodore Roosevelt (Progressive Party). Wilson’s campaign emphasized progressivism, anti-trust legislation, and social justice.
