Mount Pinatubo - Information
01
04
Mount Pinatubo is part of the Zambales Mountains range and is situated at the convergent boundary where the Philippine Sea Plate collides with the Eurasian Plate and the Sunda Plate, leading to its volcanic activity.
03
This Volcano is known as the volcano located on the tripoint boundary of the Philippine provinces of Zambales, Tarlac and Pampanga, all in Central Luzon on the northern island of Luzon.
02
01
It has an elevation of approximately 1,486 meters (4,875 feet) above sea level, making it one of the highest peaks in the Philippines.
Mount Pinatubo is a stratovolcano, also known as a composite volcano, characterized by its steep slopes and periodic explosive eruptions.
eruption
The eruption produced ash clouds that reached heights of up to 40 kilometers (25 miles) and caused widespread devastation in the surrounding areas.
Mount Pinatubo Eruption
The eruption of Mount Pinatubo occurred on June 15, 1991, and was one of the most significant volcanic eruptions of the 20th century. It had a volcanic explosivity index (VEI) of 6, making it a Plinian eruption, and ejected an estimated 10 billion metric tons of magma and ash into the atmosphere.
Lahars, or volcanic mudflows, caused by heavy rainfall mixing with volcanic ash, devastated communities downstream.
02
Ashfall from the eruption affected not only the Philippines but also neighboring countries and led to temporary global cooling.
01
Video of Eruption
The eruption resulted in the deaths of over 800 people and displaced hundreds of thousands more. The eruption caused extensive damage to infrastructure, agriculture, and livelihoods in the region.
The landscape surrounding Mount Pinatubo was drastically altered by the eruption, with the summit of the volcano collapsing to form a caldera.
02
Impact of Eruption
Recovery and rebuilding efforts have been ongoing since the eruption, with some areas still affected by volcanic hazards such as lahars.
02
Despite its destructive history, Mount Pinatubo has become a popular tourist destination for hiking and adventure tourism. Guided tours offer visitors the chance to see the volcano’s crater and the remnants of its eruption.
Tourism:
Since the eruption, extensive efforts have been made to rebuild communities and infrastructure in the affected areas. Recovery and rehabilitation projects continue to this day.
Recovery Efforts:
Since the 1991 eruption, Mount Pinatubo has been closely monitored for signs of volcanic activity to mitigate future risks. Emergency response plans have been developed to evacuate communities in the event of renewed volcanic activity.
