NIKOS KAKLAMANAKIS

We avoid being part of the content overload in the digital world.

Nikos Kaklamanakis is a Greek sailing athlete and two-time Olympic medalist. At the Olympic Games in Barcelona in 1992, he took ninth place and in Atlanta in 1996 he won the gold medal, earning the nickname: “The son of the wind” and was also the flag bearer of the expedition.

At the next Olympics in 2000 in Sydney, he took sixth place and was the standard bearer of the Greek delegation. In 2004 in Athens he won his second Olympic medal, silver this time. In this Olympiad, he was the torch bearer who lit the Olympic flame inside the Olympic Stadium. An honor reserved for athletes with great achievements.

In 1997, he crossed the Aegean Sea from Sounio to Crete in two days and in 2011, he crossed the Aegean covering 320 nautical miles on his board in two days. His mission: to carry his messages of resilience, integrity, and hope as far as the wind could take them.

Nikos Kaklamanakis is a motivational speaker and the Greek role model for the SAFER project. In a speech about bullying, Mr Kaklamanakis, the famous Greek Windsurfing Olympic champion shared with us some powerful messages. He said that tough times can actually make us stronger, and we should see them as “gifts”, opportunities for personal growth, because “the only battle we lose, is the one we don’t fight”.

He talked about stepping out of our comfort zone and standing up to bullies without becoming one ourselves, and how important it is to keep our personal integrity and keep trying even when things get hard. Like he said,” It doesn’t matter how many times you fall, but how fast you get back up” and “Winning is ultimately, a choice”

He highlighted the value of actively pursuing dreams while respecting rules and rivals, striving for self-improvement rather than waiting for others to falter so that we look successful.

With an emphasis on self-discipline, resilience, and continuous self-improvement, he encouraged everyone to keep pushing forward, learn from mistakes and focus on the journey toward success. Because after all, “In life, we move in the direction of our gaze”.

Finally, he encouraged us to be a source of support for others. “Be someone else’s miracle” he said because it will make a difference to you both. So, let’s make each other safer because it will make a difference to the whole world.

Finally, he encouraged us to be a source of support for others. “Be someone else’s hero” he said because it will make a difference to you both. So, let’s make each other safer because it will make a difference to the whole world.
