The creation

Basketball began with its invention in 1891 in Springfield, Massachusetts, by Canadian physical education instructor James Naismith as a less injury-prone sport than football. Naismith was a 31-year-old graduate student when he created the indoor sport to keep athletes indoors during the winters.

The three-point basket rule was first tested in 1933 at Tiffin High School on the idea of Herman Sayger (Tiffin, Ohio). The rule was tried for the first time at university level in 1945 for the NCAA game between the Columbia Lions and the Fordham Rams.


In France, the first basketball match took place on 27 December 1893 at the Christian university on rue de Trévise in Paris. Until 1917, however, the game remained confidential, reserved for a few dozen young people, mainly from Paris.
