The majority of trench warfare was held on the Western Front between Germany and France. The "living" conditions for soldiers in the trenches were horrendous:

  • Soldiers roasted in the sun during the summer, they froze in the bitter cold in the winter, rats ended up eating the food and the beds were also full of lice.
Due to trench warfare, a stale mate was created between the two sides.

Alliances are agreements between countries to "back" each other in both economic and militaristic means. At the beginning of the war, many countries decided to work together to defeat the opposing side. There were two main alliances in WWI; The Triple Entente (Allied Powers) and the Triple Alliance (Central Powers). The alliances increased tension between countries, yet at the same time kept the neutrality of strength between either side.

Imperialism is the expansion of a country's power and influence in search of more raw materials through military force or diplomacy. Competition between countries increased as raw materials became more of a necessity for weaponry and new industries. As competition for materials increased, tension between countries also increased.

The treaty of Brest-Litovsk marked Russia dropping out of WWI. The treaty was signed in the city of Brest-Litovsk, which is located in modern-day Belarus. Russia officially left WWI on March 3, 1918. Russia left the war due to a few reasons. These reasons include:

  • Revolutions, stories of warfare failures, riots, & low morale
Due to Russia leaving the war, Germany was able to focus it's military on the Western Front as Russia was no longer pushing on the Eastern Front.
