MATERIALS
Emma was a passionate environmentalist who was known for her commitment to sustainability. One day, she was faced with a dilemma that put her principles to the test.Emma worked in a marketing firm that was planning a promotional event for a new product launch. The event was going to be grand, with elaborate decorations, gift bags, and promotional materials. However, Emma discovered that many of the materials planned for the event were not eco-friendly. The decorations were made of non-recyclable materials, and the gift bags were single-use plastic.
CONTENT
The trainer asks: what would you do if you were Emma? Divide participants in group or differently make everyone individually reflect, and share their opinions about it. They might do it chatting or using post-its. As such, you might also do this exercise: - everyone reflect about it in silence using post-its - afterwards, they are divided in groups, and eventually find a group outcome. - compare the individual and the group opinions. At the end of the exercise, as a trainer try to map the different opinions released.
CONTENT
Supporting materials for the trainer to guide the debate with the learners: Raise Concerns: Emma could choose to voice her concerns about the environmental impact of the event's materials to her colleagues and management, even though it might lead to disagreements and delays. Suggest Alternatives: Emma could propose alternative eco-friendly materials and solutions for the event, highlighting their benefits in terms of sustainability and potentially influencing the decision-making process. Lead by Example: Emma could decide to take personal responsibility and use her own resources to provide eco-friendly decorations or gift bags for the event, showing that sustainable choices are possible.
CONTENT
Compromise: Emma might choose to compromise by agreeing to some non-eco-friendly materials but pushing for a reduction in their usage or emphasizing recycling after the event. Engage Colleagues: Emma could gather support from like-minded colleagues who share her concern for the environment and collectively approach management with suggestions for a more sustainable event. Advocate Privately: Emma might decide to approach her manager privately to express her concerns and offer suggestions, avoiding potential conflicts in a public setting. Focus on the Bigger Picture: Emma could consider the potential positive impact of the new product on sustainability in the long run and decide to prioritize the product launch's success while continuing to advocate for more sustainable practices in the future.
CONTENT
Take a Stand: Emma could take a principled stand, stating that she cannot participate in planning an event that goes against her values and actively disassociating herself from the event. Educate and Inform: Emma could choose to educate her colleagues and management about the environmental consequences of their choices, aiming to raise awareness and encourage more sustainable decisions. Evaluate Personal Values: Emma could reflect on her personal values and determine whether her commitment to sustainability is more important than her current job role, potentially leading her to reconsider her career path.
