More detailed history of "La Carmeta"

The municipal laundry was built in 1934, when D. Manuel Calderón was mayor of the town (shot during the fratricidal civil war), although over the years it has undergone different structural modifications until its last restoration in 2008, being mayor of the town D. Joaquín Alabarces Peñalver (now deceased). I must admit that today it is a work very worth visiting, being a sober building, but of a certain elegance. It is a tall structure covered by a gabled roof covered with tiles and transverse with wooden beams and supported by six columns made of bricks and cement. A ditch runs through its center with a large flow of water (which comes from the so-called Holy Fountain), with grooved sides so that clothes can be washed better and ends up in the low pool, where it is stored to irrigate the plantations of tropical fruits of the low plain up to the limit of the road thatthat leads to Motril.

How has Itrabo Square evolved?

The Plaza de Andalucía has evolved over time. Prior to its current appearance, it had different configurations, including large trees, stone benches, and a telephone booth. It has undergone renovations, with changes to the railings, steps and the type of trees. Today, the floor of the square is made of stone, forming the shield of Ítrabus2. This plaza is a vital meeting point for the community, where important events are held and the history ofI trabo. From its Phoenician past to its vibrant present, Plaza de Andalucía remains an emblematic place in this charming town in the province of Granada.

This public laundry is located at the end of José Martín Recuerda street, starting from Picasso street, and ends at an old oil mill, now in ruins, its last owner being Mr. Vicente López Sánchez (recently deceased), leaving only its walls, as a mute witness of other better times. There is a small square where the laundry room is located, this little square flows into Zanja Street.

Of particular note is the parish church of Nuestra Señora del Carmen, with its neoclassical style and beautiful proportions. Of its patrimony, it must be said that a large part was destroyed by the militiamen and lost during the civil war: a crucifix that presided over the altar, an immaculate conception very similar to that of Alonso Cano, a group of Saint Anne the Virgin and Child.

The Plaza de Andalucía in Ítrabo is the heart of this town. Located in the centre of the municipality, it is the place where the most important events are held. Throughout its history, it has undergone significant changes. When the Christians took Ítrabo after the conquest of Granada by the Catholic Monarchs, this farmstead had a population of 50 inhabitants and depended on the alfoz of Almuñécar. Like other towns in the Mediterranean region, Ítrabo has witnessed the passage of civilizations ancient peoples, such as the Phoenicians, who came here to trade.
