First thoughts on AI design assistant in NILE

Magic Padlet uses the power of generative AI to create an entire padlet based on your description. This is a feature that we are constantly updating as we review how people are using it. This guide aims to help you understand how to use Magic Padlet most effectively.

I can't draw uses the power of generative AI to create beautiful images based on a description you provide. You can then choose one of the images to use in your post.

Case Study

AI Design Assistant

AI Design Assistant is a feature of Ultra courses, and may be used by academic staff to generate ideas regarding course structure, images, tests/quizzes, discussion/journal prompts, and rubrics. The AI Design Assistant only generates suggestions when it is asked to by members of academic staff, and cannot automatically add anything to NILE courses.

AI technology is not new and we already use it in everyday life for:

Tools such as ChatGPT and Google Bard can:

  • answer questions
  • complete written tasks
  • respond to prompts in a human-like way

Generative AI refers to technology that can be used to create new content based on large volumes of data that models have been trained on from a variety of works and other sources. ChatGPT and Google Bard are generative artificial intelligence (AI) tools built on large language models (LLMs).

University position on Artificial Intelligence (AI)

UON recognises that Artificial Intelligence (AI) Tools are increasingly embedded within commonly used applications such as Microsoft Office and web browsers. There is also a wide range of free and paid for external AI tools available. In response to this, UON commits to supporting staff and students to become AI-literate. Where appropriate, teaching and assessment may reference or use AI tools.

There are three suggested approaches in relation to AI and assessment:

  1. Do not engage with AI within the assessment and explicitly state this in the brief and within taught sessions. This is a challenging option as it can be difficult to detect AI within assessments at time of writing (August 2023). If AI is detected, then the usual Academic Integrity procedures would be followed using the UON Academic Integrity and Misconduct Policy.
  2. Utilise AI within assessment preparation. For example, to fact check, or generate a first draft etc. This would ensure that the students are familiar with AI and are able to use it appropriately, with permission and within context. The parameters should be outlined within the brief and verbally explained to the students during taught sessions.
  3. The assessment is based upon AI and designed around it. For example, it uses AI to create assignment drafts or to create the piece of work being assessed. Several colleagues within creative and IT-related subjects use AI to create the item for assessment, and the assessment briefs explicitly ask students to reflect upon the use of AI.

Staff use of AI at UON

Artificial Intelligence (AI) Tools are now commonly available for both staff and student use. Where these require external registration / sign up then staff are reminded of the guidance for the use of third party tools. The poster on 10 things for students to know about AI provides a quick introduction to AI and some of the implications. Staff training and 1:1 support are available for anybody needing more dedicated assistance.

Empowering educators: How to guides

What is prompt engineering?

Prompt engineering is the process where you guide generative artificial intelligence (generative AI) solutions to generate desired outputs. Even though generative AI attempts to mimic humans, it requires detailed instructions to create high-quality and relevant output. In prompt engineering, you choose the most appropriate formats, phrases, words, and symbols that guide the AI to interact with your users more meaningfully.
