HistoryJohn Tarleton- Founder The Tarleton State University was named after John Tarleton, a rancher, a man who had little education but left a staggering bequest of $85,000 in his will which he left behind to fund a school so that many young children would get the opportunity to be educated that he never received. That college is now known as the Tarleton State University.
Fun Facts The Tarleton Texans have a gesture called the ‘States Up’ where they raise their hands folded in the shape of Texas to show state spirit. They extend the thumb out and the pointer and middle fingers upward while folding the ring and pinky fingers inward to the location of the Stephenville campus on the Texas map. The students respect the campus by not walking on the grass and this a long standing tradition for a 100 years which has helped the Tarleton Campus remain in a pristine condition. They also endeavor to avoid walking on the mosaic of the Texan Rider at the Tarleton Center or in front of the university seal in the Thompson Center. The number of trees on Campus correspond with the number of Counties in Texas.
Notable Alumni Randy Winkler- Professional Footballer Randy Winkler was part of the class of 1966 at Tarleton State University. He was a two-time All-Texas College pick and All-American who later played professional football. He played as an offensive tackler in the NLB league.
