D'origine chinoise, Chloé Zhao est arrivée aux Etats-Unis pendant ses études. Elle a réalisé un premier film en 2015 Les chansons que mes frères m'ont apprises. The Rider est son second long-métrage. Ensuite, elle a réalisé Nomadland en 2020 pour lequel elle a reçu l'Oscar de la meilleure réalisatrice et celui du meilleur film. Depuis, elle a réalisé The Eternals des studios Marvel en 2021.

"Il faut se battre sans cesse pour faire un film indépendant. Avant même de m'interroger sur mon style, je me demandais comment faire un film qui coûte le moins possible, tout en restant intéressant ! Si j'avais eu dès le départ la possibilité de faire tout ce que je voulais, je ne serais certainement pas devenue la cinéaste que je suis. "

3/ Le contexte

Chloé Zhao tourne avec des acteurs non-professionnels dont le personnage principal Brady Jandreau > Brady Blackburn, elle s'inspire de sa vie tout en distillant de la fiction.Sa soeur, Lilly est autiste Asperger ; son ami, Lane, est tétraplégique suite à un accident. Brady est champion de rodéo. Le rodéo est une spécificité américaine liée à l'histoire du pays et des cow-boys.

Le film se déroule dans une réserve indienne, Pine Ridge, dans le Dakota du Sud où se trouve la tribu des Sioux Lakota.

The Rider raconte le récit d'une convalescence : le scénario est simple et s'attache à des moments où le personnage hésite, où il évolue pour finalement "guérir" - même s'il ne reprend pas sa vie d'avant. Chloé Zhao travaille sur les effets de miroir et les scènes qui se répondent > effet de symétrie notamment avec la scène d'ouverture et celle du chapeau.
