The most popular theory is that Valentine defied Emperor Claudius II's orders, which prohibited young soldiers from getting married. Saint Valentine continued to perform marriages in secret, but he was eventually discovered. It is believed that while he was in jail, he sent love letters to the jailer's daughter, signing them as 'from your Valentine.
