Wilson Asks Congress to Declare War

"" I ask that the Congress declare the recent course of the German government to be nothing less than war against the government and people of the United States. Neutrality is no longer possible when the peace of the world is involved and the freedom of people at stake. The menance to peace and freedom lies in the existence of autocratic governments. The world must be made safe for democracy. We have no selfish purpose and desire no conquest. We seek no compensation for the sacrifices we shall have to make. It is a fearful thing to lead this great nation into the most terrible of all wars when civizilation itself seems to be hanging in the balance. But, to do what is right is necessary and we shall fight for democracy."
