When Germany invaded Belgium, stories began to circulate about atrocities committed against Belgian civilians. These stories, both true and exaggerated, were seized upon for propaganda. . This propaganda was soon sweeping the US, firing anti-German sentiment.

A pledge by the Germans not to sink passenger ships without any warning and saving innocent lives. Germany later ignored this pledge.

A British passenger ship sunk by the Germans, killing 1,200 people, including over 100 Americans. The US had a vested financial interest in the outcome of the war in Europe. American businesses and banks made huge loans to the Allies.
