the historical development of the death penalty.
The Death Penalty
+info
18 century BCE
- The death penalty violates the most fundamental human rights: the right of life;
- Frequently, murders are committed in moments of passion or anger, or by criminals who are substance abusers and acted impulsively;
- Retribution is another word for revenge. Our laws and criminal justice system should lead us to higher principles that demonstrate a complete respect for life, even the life of a murderer;
- Once an inmate is executed, nothing can be done to make amends if a mistake has been made;
- Almost all defendants facing the death penalty cannot afford their own attorney. They are dependent on the quality of the lawyers assigned by the state, many of whom lack experience in capital cases or are so underpaid that they fail to investigate the case properly.
- The death penalty can prevent murder and reduce the number of victims;
- Only the taking of the murderer’s life restores the balance and allows society to show convincingly that murder is an intolerable crime;
- No one will be executed without certain proofs (DNA test for example);
- Each crime is unique, both because the circumstances of each victim are different and because each defendant is different.

The Death penalty in the world
We belive that the death penalty is not the right punishment, not even for the most serious crime . Taking the life of a person who has committed a serious crime would be to lower oneself to his or her own level and that is not what the government should do. On the contrary, we should reinforce the punishments that already exist, so that they are always applied without any exceptions. For example, a murderer ,who is assigned a life sentence, cannot be released from prison after 10 years for good behavior .
What is our position on the death penalty:
- The first established death penalty laws.
- It codified the death penalty for 25 different crimes.
- Death sentences were carried out by such means as crucifixion, drowning, beating to death, burning alive, and impalement.
18 century BCE
Code of King Hammurabi of Babylon
The death penalty is the legal punishment of executing a person for a specific crime. It is the ultimate punishment, and it is only given in case of very serious crimes, considered capital offenses. Nowadays, the death penalty has been abolished in the majority of nations, but over 60% of the world's population live in countries where the death penalty is retained, such as the United States, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nigeria, Egypt.
- The death penalty is authorized by 27 states and the federal government
- It's prohibited in 23 states
