Research Question
Are threats to masculinity having unforeseen social and affective side effects on young American men between the ages of 18-25?
The Problem
Amidst women's equality movements, there's a notable regression in gender equality support, especially among younger men.
men face significant issues, including employment struggles, health concerns, a need for purpose, educational goals, and mental/emotional health.
The precarious state from these challenges increases susceptibility to reactionary movements, as they seek solutions and belonging.
Men aged 18 to 23 have the least optimism for their futures and the lowest levels of social support.
40% of all men say they trust one or more“men’s rights,” anti-feminist, or pro-violencevoices from the manosphere

Why Should I Care?

WHY?By challenging traditional masculinity, mainstream progressive social movements don't just challenge toxic masculinity, they challenge men's partial source of purpose and self-esteem.
Identity Theory
Renowned sociologist Henri Tajfel posits that individuals derive a portion of their self-concept from their membership in social groups, including a sense of belonging, purpose, self-worth, and identity (Tajfel).

Boohoo :(
Radical communities, such as Incels (involuntary celibates) and Fascists right-wing groups, that manifest aggressive behavior towards threatening women, continue to grow in popularity and membership. Men are also reporting higher numbers of depression, anxiety, and loneliness, suggesting that the left's efforts to change traditional masculine norms are having a significant undesired impact on masculine behavior, self-esteem, and social adaptation.

Research Problems
This paper has critically examined the complex interplay between the rise of sociopolitical feminism and its impact on traditional masculinity, particularly focusing on young American men aged 18-25. The findings suggest that the feminist endeavor to deconstruct hegemonic masculinity, while laudable in its pursuit of gender equality, has inadvertently influenced men's health and behavior. This impact is especially pronounced in men whose identities are closely intertwined with traditional masculine norms. The advent of modern feminism, aimed at dismantling patriarchal structures and stereotypes, has indeed made significant strides towards gender equality. However, this shift has also triggered a spectrum of responses among men. For those perceiving these changes as a threat to their gender identity, the resulting emotional landscape is marked by feelings of shame, guilt, and anger. These affective responses, stemming from a perceived threat to masculine identity, highlight the unintended counterproductive consequences of current feminist strategies. Notably, it underscores a paradox where efforts to reduce masculine dominance and toxicity inadvertently place women at higher risk, as they become targets of aggression in certain male-dominated radical communities.
Conclusion
Thank You!
As men’s positive distinctiveness deteriorates, the natural sociological response is to either seek membership in groups of higher status. This quest for belonging and identity often draws them to the manosphere, a digital space with varied ideologies, some of which are radical and grounded in anti-feminist or misogynistic views. Within these groups, men find a narrative that resonates with their experience of disenfranchisement, offering a sense of empowerment, albeit through divisive or harmful ideologies.
Sociopolitical Feminism's attempt to challenge hegemonic masculinity by deconstructing masculinity is affecting men's health and behavior, especially men whose identity strongly relies on masculinity membership
The advent of modern feminism has significantly reshaped gender dynamics, challenging traditional roles and stereotypes. This shift, while promoting gender equality, has also elicited a range of responses from men, particularly those who perceive these changes as a threat to their gender identity. feminist activism attempting to reduce masculine status is likely to trigger strong affective responses in fragile men characterized by shame, guilt, and anger–all mediators of masculine identity threat. This progression should not be interpreted as an attempt to paint men as victims. Rather, it seeks to explain the counterproductive consequences of modern feminist strategies: it puts women at risk.
