Types of Firewood needed

  • Kindling

  • Fuel (fire wood)
  • Find a safe location without tall brush and trees
  • Dig your pit at least two inches deep
  • Make sure there is enough room for wood to be stacked and a clearing of at least 6-10 inches around the firewood
  • Clear leaves and debris around the firepit
  • Pay attention to wind direction
  • Using rocks to line the perimeter of your firepit can be dangerous if the rocks contain moisture

Clean up all trash and place it in a trash bag or ziploc bag if backpacking. Throw away trash bag once you are near a trash can.

If dug in a location with grass, make sure grass is replaced and lightly tamped down so roots will eventually take hold.

Replace dirt that was removed for firepit once fire and coals are completely extinguished..
