COLOMBIAN DRUG WAR

The drug trafficking in Colombia refers to the production and trade of drugs in this State. Colombia is home to some of the most violent drug conflicts in the wolrd. The drug trafficking started in the 1970s with small quantities of cocaine being exported to the USA. The first cocaine labs were collocated in the jungle.

INTRODUCTION

- 30th April 1984: murder of Rodrigo Lara, Colombia's justice minister, ordered by Pablo Escobar. - The government activated the Extradition Law against drug trafficking. - Plan Colombia: most significant program to fight illegal armed groups (ex. guerrilla warfare).

THE BEGINNING OF THE CONFLICT

- It was the most powerful organized Colombian drug cartel and terrorist organization- It was founded and led by Pablo Escobar- 80% of world's cocaine was under the control of this cartel- 1976-1993

MEDELLIN CARTEL

- Colombia is producing more cocaine than ever in its history - There are more than 300 active drug smuggling organizations - The failure of the Colombian government

DRUG WAR TODAY

- Deforestation- Soil erosion - Chemical pollution - Prostitution ---> sexually transmitted diseas
