PLANTS
Are plants living things?
Plants, like animals, are living things because they are born, grow, reproduce and die.
-Plants can be classified by their appearance into: -Trees: They have a hard and thick stem called a trunk. They are tallest plant. -Bushes: They have a short and thin stem. They have low branches. -Grasses: Their stems are flexible. Most of them have more than one stem.
Are all plants the same?
Do plants breathe?
Unlike other living things, plants do not need to eat, they create their own food. Plants make their own food in their leaves. The process is carried out as follows: 1. Roots absorb water and minerals from the soil. This liquid is called raw sap. 2. It travels up the stem to the leaves. 3. In the leaves, the plant absorbs sunlight and carbon dioxide. 4. The leaves use this energy to change carbon dioxide and water into a sugar called elaborated sap. This is the plant´s food. 5. At the same time, the leaves release oxygen into the air.
How do plants make the food?
-Deciduous trees: they lose their leaves in autumn.
-Evergreen trees: they do not lose their leaves in autumn
Are all the leaves the same?
Plants, like the other living things with which they coexist, adapt to their environment and its characteristics. For this reason, we find very different plants depending on the light, temperature, humidity and type of soil where they live.
Where do plants live?
Plants reproduce and, thanks to this, species are maintained for years and years. Reproduction is not the same for all plants. Plants with flower reproduce differently from plants without flowers. Flowering plants reproduce with seeds. Non-flowering plants reproduce with spores.
How do plants reproduce?
Moss and fern do not have flowers and reproduce by spores. In flowering plants, the flower is very important for reproduction, and each part has a function: -Pistil: the female reproductive organ. It contains the ovules. -Stamens: the male reproductive organs. They contain the pollen. -Calyx: the set of green leaves that support the flower. Each leaf is called sepal. -Corolla: the group of coloured leaves that attract insects. Each coloured leaf is called a petal.
Do all plants have flowers?
1. Pollen from one flower travels to another flower. 2. Pollen enters the pistil. 3. The flower loses its leaves and the pistil becomes a fruit. 4. The seeds are inside the fruit. 5. The seeds fall to the ground. 6. From each seed a new plant can grow.
Pollination, fertilization, germination
The life cycle of a plant repeats itself and happens over and over again. This is how a species is able to endure over the years and over the centuries. Each plant needs to adapt to the environment to complete its life cycle.
Do all plants have the same life cycle?
Roots: They anchor the plant to the ground. They also absorb the water and minerals that the plant needs. Stem: It supports the plant and holds up the leaves. Water and minerals travel through it to the rest of the plant. Leaves: They absorb sunlight and carbon dioxide and make food for the plant. Fruit: it protects the seed. Flower: It contains the reproductive organs.
