Climate Change In Miami

How has it affected Miami?

Climate change has affected Miami in many different ways. The heat is at an all time high, floods and sea levels are rising, and storms are getting stronger. According to the City of Miami, they could go from having 25 dangerous heat days a year to about 100 dangerous heat days by 2050. A hotter and wetter climate will also extend the duration of mosquito season, which can make the residents of Miami more prone to contracting vector borne diseases. Rising sea levels and stronger storms will affect the entire city, and make the city almost unlivable for all residents.

What is being done?

It's not just Miami that is experiencing climate change and extreme heat. Summer 23 is now the hottest summer recorded on Earth. According to World Weather Attribution analysis, places like Arizona, Texas, and New Mexico all experienced extreme heat waves because of human caused climate change. When the heat also rises, this intensifies the risk of rapidly-intensifying hurricanes. This wouldn't just affect places like Miami, it would affect all the regions around it becuase hurriances are large in size. Warmer weather will also cause our glaciers to melt even faster, which results in our sea levels rising.

Miami has many goals to beat climate change. One of their strategies called the Miami Forever Climate Ready strategy has 5 goals. Some of these goals include improving infastrucure and and enchaning their waterfront. Miami has also implemented the Miami Forever Bond that funds a series of projects. The projects that will be funded include Sea-Level Rise and Flood Prevention, Roadways, Parks and Cultural Facilities, Public Safety and Affordable Housing. About $400 million will go into these projects.
