Isabella I married Ferdinand of Aragon on 19 October 1469. They needed a special papal bull to marry because they were second cousins, and they finally got it in 1472. Together, they conquered the Kingdom of Granada and formed marriage alliances that allowed their grandson, Charles, to inherit the thrones of Castile and Aragon, among others. Isabella and Ferdinand fought for the throne of Castile, first against Henry IV and then in the War of the Castilian Succession against Juana la Beltraneja. Elizabeth reorganized government and administration, centralizing the power previously held by the nobles. He also carried out reforms in citizen security and the economy. He supported Christopher Columbus in his search for the West Indies, which led to the discovery of America and the creation of the Spanish Empire. Isabella ruled for thirty years as Queen of Castile and twenty-six as Queen Consort of Aragon alongside Ferdinand II.
