During segregation, African-Americans faced discrimination.

Discrimination lasted from the 1800s until the 1960s. Still today, there is discrimination.

After the American Civil War, in the south, former slaves grew watermelon on their own land to earn money. For African-Americans, watermelons were a symbol of liberation and self-reliance. For white masters, they embodied a loss of dominance. This led to a politically strong cultural caricature, using the watermelon to disparage African Americans as bad, childish, lazy, and publicly embarrassing.

Watermelon stereotype

Appeared in the late 1860s.
