History
New York was founded in 1624 by the Dutch, under the name New Amsterdam; the first settlement was located on the southern tip of Manhattan Island. In 1664 this settlement was conquered by the British, who changed its name to New York Because of the very high land prices on Manhattan Island, the 1920s and 1930s saw the construction of ever higher buildings, the so-called skyscrapers. The most famous of these is probably the Empire State Building, built in 1931, which until 1973 was the tallest in the world.
Location
New york is located in the north east of the country, only a small part of the country is washed by the sea while on the opposite side New York borders with Canada
The executive branch of New York City consists of the mayor and numerous departments, councils, and commissions. Legislative power in New York City is vested in the City Council of New York. The Council is a unicameral body composed of 51 members of the Council. The members of the Council are elected every four years. The New York City state justice system has two city courts, the Criminal Court and the Civil Court, and several state courts, the Supreme Court, the Surrogate Court and the Family Court.
