The 'state variations' are modifications or additions to international regulations that a specific state can adopt to adapt to its own needs or circumstances. For example, a state may have stricter regulations on the transportation of certain types of hazardous goods.

Operators (airlines) can also submit variations, provided they are always more restrictive than the base regulations. They are identified by a code composed of two alphanumeric characters (representing the airline) and a group of two digits in strict ascending numerical order.

Info

Each state is identified by a three-letter code, with the last one being a G (for 'Government').

You can check to which country an airline belongs on the list of Member Airlines on the IATA website.

  • If we look at variation JL-02, it is not used. This means that it has been discontinued and therefore should not be taken into account

For example, (JL) Japan Airlines has submitted 11 variations: JL-01 to JL-11.
