The Villains: introduction
How their figure changed
Over the course of cinematic history, the role of the villain underwent a huge transformation: from the bad guy who just wanted to conquer the world, to a complex character with deep personality to often becoming real pop culture icons.Sometimes, the villain himself is the main character of the movie, gaining even a larger importance both in the movie and in the viewer heart, here some examples:
4) Did you enjoy understanding the antagonist’s motivation?
3) What feature of the character did you find intriguing or seductive?
2) Which one(s)?
The questions
1) Have you ever found yourself rooting for the villain in a play or a film?
The Satan Project
Satan is probably the most interesting characters in PARADISE LOST. Recently there have been a lot of TV series and films where the villain is the main character or where bad guys are interesting as good guys.Among the most iconic villains we have the Joker. All over the years we had many "Jokers", but one of the best is the one from the omonimous stand-alone movie, where we got the Joker seen under a whole new point of view.
the devil in a new dress
In Milton's masterpiece we could describe him as as an EPIC HERO, ready to engage battles in order to achieve his goal and free his people, coming out from the canonic description of this character, only based on his role of the evil angel.
Satan
the crazy clown
Joker is batman's archnemesis, known for being CRAZY and for dressing like a CLOWN.In 2019 was released the omonimous film, where the background story of this fascinating villain was finally told.

GENRE
The character is canonically seen as the embodiment of evil, but his actions take the readers on his side.
Here, the Joker completely blurs the lines beetwen right and wrong, costantly passing from being the victim to being the predator, confusing the viewer's opinion.
In contrast to the Joker, Satan can be easily backed up by the audience, as he comes out as a rebel, a courageus hero that make the people support his goals.
At the start of the film the audience can easily feel an empathy with the Joker, as he is presented as a pathetic guy, but as his actions become more violent, the viewer feels a sort of distance from him.
The Devil's goal is to rebel against God, currupting humanity to undermine God's plans.
The motivations behind Joker actions are the desire for chaos and anarchy.
Satan is a character of a 17th century epic poem, that explores the fall of the man and the loss of free will.

The comparison
The joker is a comic book character, born in the 20th century. The one considered here is the one coming from the 2019 film, where is explored his psychology
At the end, we can sum up the results we got from this comparison beetwen the first protagonist villain and the most iconic one.
These two characters represents two completely different ways to see a villain: from one side we have the individual who wants to change the society, on the other side we have the individual who got changed by the society.
