LTL Damage Claim: Documented on delivery receipt

  • Claim must be filed within 8 months of delivery date – the sooner the better.
  • Damage must be clearly and specifically documented on delivery receipt.
  • Always provide pictures whenever possible.
  • Freight must be kept in the condition it was received in until the claim is settled, or the carrier gives the okay for disposal.
    • If the carrier requests an inspection or possession as part of the settlement and the freight is not available, the claim will be voided.

Truckload Claims

  • Claims must be filed within 8 months of delivery date.
  • If resolution cannot be met within 120 days of claim receipt the carrier is to remit written notice and the reasons for needing an extension.
  • Damage must be documented on delivery receipt at the time of delivery.
  • Truckload carrier’s insurance coverage is $100,000 USD. If a shipment exceeds that limit C.H. Robinson must be notified prior to shipping.

LTL Concealed Damage Claim: No documentation at the time of delivery.

  • Damage must be reported to carrier within 5 days of delivery or claim will not be accepted by carrier. CHR – Claims SOP Overview
  • Pictures are a major asset when filing, since the carrier has already been given a clean bill of delivery.
  • Freight must be kept in the condition it was received in when damage was discovered. If carrier requests an inspection or possession as part of the settlement and the freight is not available, the claim will be voided.

LTL Shortage Claim: Freight delivered with pieces missing

  • Carrier must be given 5-7 days to locate missing pieces.
  • If unsuccessful, the claim must be filed within 8 months of delivery date as long as the missing pieces were documented on the delivery receipt – the sooner the better.
  • If shortage or lost freight is found while the claim is being processed, the Claimant has the duty to accept the freight and close the claim. The only time a claim would remain is if the freight was delivered and then found to have damages or other shortages, the claim would be amended to a damage claim.
