  • Bantustans were still under the control of the South African government since they approved the appointment of chiefs and were assisted by white officials.

HomelandsThe "homelands" or Bantustans in South Africa during Apartheid are signified on this map by the dark tan areas. These were designated areas where tribes could live and "govern themselves".

  • Mandela was imprisoned for 30 years at Robben Island.

Nelson Mandela

Nelson Mandela was an adovcate for abolishing Apartheid in South Africa. He joined the ANC and challenged pass laws by organizing protests with other ANC leaders. He was eventually arrested for his connection to the MK, the militant wing of the ANC.
