The Murder of Adama Traoré

The case: Emmett Till

Just Mercy, Bryan Stevenson

When they see us, Netflix

Document I used :

What were the consequences of racial differences at the international ?

Start

1-Big police blunders

Adama Traoré died on July 19, 2016 in the Persan barracks, almost two hours after his arrest in his town of Beaumont-sur-Oise. He died of heat stroke, however during his arrest there was an act that caused Adama to be weakened. What emerges would be a probable police blunder which would have cost him his life.

1a- Adama Traoré murder

This mini series is based on real events. It features five teenagers accused of the rape and murder of a jogger in Central Park in New York in 1989. These four blacks and this Latino from Harlem, although innocent, are forced by police officers to confess to this crime which they never committed. The five boys were finally completely exonerated in 2002, when the real guilty confessed, with DNA evidence to back it up.

1b-Abuse of power

As the main common point, we can remember the judicial errors of which Adama Traoré and the 5 teenagers from Harlem were victims. And even if they are not the same types of mistakes, these 6 people have 1 thing in common, they were black or Latino. And evidently they're 2 true story

Common Point :

We can see several differences between these documents, such as for example the dates of the events which are spaced more or less 30 years apart, the fact that these two stories are not from the same period shows that racism perpetuates throughout the ages and that Obviously this is not about to stop. The difference in time is not the only difference; we can also notice that these two stories are not from the same country. Indeed that of Adama takes place in France, this shows that racism is not only timeless but also that it is a global problem

The differences

2-Injustice of trial

A notable event highlighting a racism-related miscarriage of justice is the case of Emmett Till. In 1955, Emmett Till, a 14-year-old African-American teenager, was brutally murdered by two white men in the state of Mississippi, United States. The killers were acquitted by an all-white jury in the subsequent trial, despite overwhelming evidence. This event was a catalyst for the civil rights movement and brought attention to the racism and systemic injustice prevalent at the time.

2a-Emmet Till murder

The book's main story focuses on Walter McMillian, a black man wrongly convicted of murdering a white teenage girl in Alabama. Stevenson takes McMillian's case in hand, convinced of his innocence. He encounters hostility from the local establishment and the violence of systemic racism, but he persists in his quest for justice. Beyond McMillian's case, Stevenson also shares other moving and moving stories from his career, highlighting the inequalities and injustices faced by many others marginalized by the system

2b-A perfect lawyer

Common point

Although there are commonalities between Emmett Till's case and the book "Just Mercy" when it comes to issues of racism and injustice, there are also significant differences between the two. Time and Context: The Emmett Till case took place in 1955, during a time when racism and segregation were still deeply rooted in the United States. On the other hand, the book “Just Mercy” focuses on the current challenges and issues faced by individuals marginalized by the American justice system. Nature of the stories: The Emmett Till case is a historical event, while the book "Just Mercy" is a story based on real cases by Bryan Stevenson, highlighting various cases of injustice and systemic racism. Geographic scope: The Emmett Till case took place particularly in the state of Mississippi, while the book "Just Mercy" focuses on stories from different parts of the United States, including Alabama . Impacts and Repercussions: The Emmett Till case was a triggering event for the civil rights movement in the United States, while the book "Just Mercy" aims to raise awareness about the ongoing problems of the justice system and inspire a more equitable reform.
