What is a stereotype?

index

According to the Oxford dictionary, a stereotype is "a fixed idea or image that many people have of a particular type of person or thing, but which is often not true in reality and may cause hurt and offence". And Britannica Encyclopedia adds that it is "an often unfair and untrue belief that many people have about a group of people or things with a particular characteristic".

What is a stereotype?

A stereotype can be explicitly or implicitly taught to people through many social influences, family, neighbours, school, cinema and others. They appear because there is a basic cognitive need to categorize, simplify and process the complex world which is different from ours. Stereotypes can definitely influence people's attitudes

As you have noticed, many of the stereotypes are quite negative, and as such should be avoided. As you all know there is also gender stereotyping, women have to dress and behave in a certain way, etc. Due to globalization, many of the stereotypes are, in fact, dissapearing because cultures are changing around the world.

Are they true?

Conclusions

They change according to the different worldviews
