Se olhares para o céu numa noite escura e longe das luzes da cidade, observarás uma infinidade de pequenos pontos luminosos parecem estar distribuídos irregularmemte sobre uma enorme esfera,tal como se ilumina.Essa esfera é uma esfera imaginária que se designa por esfera celeste.

Observa,por exemplo,a Cassiopeia e Cefeu junto à linha do horizonte ;a Ursa Menor mais acima ,olhando para norte ,e a Ursa Maior mais acima e também olhando para norte.

Em dezembro a Cassiopeia encontra-se no ponto mais alto do seu percurso anual; olhando para norte,a Ursa Menor, com a Estrela Polar na cauda ,e a Ursa Maior perto da linha do horizonte.

Algumas constelações nos extremos austrais ou boreais(sul ou norte) sópodem ser vistas em um dos hemisférios ou são vistas,mas em diferente ângulo,o que modifica sua visão e sua interpretação. Assim,a constelação Cruzeiro do Sul ,a mais importante do hemisfério sul é somente vista desse hemisfério,que faz parte das constelações austrais.
