Holocaust Survivors
Questions to Consider You will use these questions to help you complete the activity on the following page. Choose ONE story: Answer the following questions: 1) where was the survivor from 2) explain this person's experience during the Holocaust 3) your reactions to the reading.
Gerda Weissman (video) Gerda Weissmann was 15 years old when Germany invaded Poland on September 1, 1939. Her brother was taken away by Nazis one month after the invasion and never seen again. Over the next six years, she was separated from her parents and endured unimaginable terror until she was liberated by the Allied forces from a Nazi death camp in the final days of World War II. She was the only one of her immediate family to survive the Holocaust. On February 15, 2011, President Barack Obama presented Gerda Weissmann Klein with the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian award in the United States, for her work as an author, historian, and human rights advocate. At the ceremony, President Obama read a statement from Weissmann Klein: "I pray you never stand at any crossroads in your own lives, but if you do, if the darkness seems so total, if you think there is no way out, remember, never ever give up." Survivors of the Holocaust have documented their victories over their horrifying experience in the Holocaust, although the numbers of survivors are dwindling today. Weismann Klein died in 2022 at the age of 97.
