Why do we need the original bill?
It shows their original energy rate per kWh, which you can use as ammo to educate our customer on how much the utility has increased their prices since they first went solar.
Shows the customer's usage history. If there is no usage history, that will tell you they went solar with a square footage design.
The bill also shows important info such as, account or meter number. You can use this to call & collect usage from the utility, assist the customer in registering for an online account or send a forgot password link.

In just 3 years this customer’s base rate increased by .04 cents! I was able to use this as ammo to prove how much more the utility increases their rates and made our capped 2.9% escalator look good!
Here are snippets of an original bill submitted in 2018 from a California PG&E customer.
kWh Usage History
We want to confirm whether the original system was based on usage history or square footage.
When the original utility bill displays little to no usage history that usually tells us the customer was a new homeowner when they decided to go solar.
That helps you pinpoint why their current system is not generating enough power for their needs.
Shows the kilowatt usage history, we based their original system on

Common objection reps will run into…
“I get paper bills and I throw them away after I pay it. I won’t get another bill for few weeks. I can send it to you then.”
Pro tip!
Once that’s done you’ll be able to log-in and download all the information you need. You can also use this method for utilities that doesn't show 12 months worth of usage.
We have all the information a utility company requires in order to set-up an online account for them. (account number, address, contact info)
Most reps will waste 30-40 minutes on the phone with the utility trying to collect the bill or they’ll set-up a call back for 2 weeks … Not us!!!
How to have the conversation
The only piece of info we don’t have is the last 4 of the account holders social. Just ask for it confidently, it’s not a big deal. We already ask every PG&E customer for this information.

Easy Money!!
Original Agreement shows the rate per kwh they signed up with originally
Example of a Vivint Solar PPA (aka TPO) I pulled for the same customer who went solar in 2018.
A lot of Vivint Solar add-ons were sold at higher rates than Sunrun’s current base rates.
Vivint customer signed up at .17¢ per kWh. Sunrun’s current base rate in this market is at .15¢.
Knowing this information I was able to flex her up .02¢ and offer her the same rate she’s paying now!

Hey Judy, it looks like we signed you up at .17¢ per kWh 3 years ago, I’m happy to let you know that we can go ahead and offer you that same rate for the energy the new panels will be producing!
How to have the conversation
Whenever someone looks at going solar, we base their design on how much energy their home consumed in kilowatts throughout the course of 1-year. That’s how we determine the number of panels each home receives. If someone is new to their home or has lived there for less than one year, we design the system on based off the square footage/size of the home. Unfortunately, sometimes square footage can be inaccurate because it’s going off an estimate. Your original bill shows no usage, so we designed your system off square footage. The good news is we now know how much energy your home actually consumes and we can add panels for true coverage.
