LEARNING OBJECTIVE

At the end of the lesson,you will be able to use the second conditional to talk about imaginary situations.

Possible or Unreal situation?

  • It describes the result of a possible (but uncertain or unlikely) action.
  • Use the past simple to describe the hypothetical action, and “would” with the base verb to describe the result of the action.

4 Felipe has a tough boss who expects him to work very long hous. He feels very stressed. He'd like to have a more sympathetic boss.

3 Trudy has to travel for an hour by train every day to get to work. It is tiring and expensive. She would like to work from home for part of the week, to save time and costs.

2 Don travels a lot in his work. He has a young family but he doesn't see them very often. He would like to travel less and spend more time with his family.

1 Marta has young children at school but also works full-time. She has to work fixed hours from 9am to 5pm. She'd like to work flexi-time so she can meet her children from school.

EXERCISES

Pascale works in an open-plan office with a lot of other people. The office is noisy and it's difficult to work. He'd like to have his own office.If I had my own office, it would be easier to work.
