The Aztecs

To create farmland, the Aztecs piled mud into the swamp to create areas of land above the water level
Aztecs built houses, temples, and public buildings and constructed stone roadways that connected the main island to settlements on smaller islands.
What were the characteristics of Aztec society?

Education was required for all children in the Aztec Empire, regardless of their gender or whether they were free or enslaved
Education taught children to work hard and behave humbly, and it prepared children for their roles as adults

The Aztecs collected tribute from defeated groups, adding to Aztec wealth.
The civilization grew into a wealthy and powerful empire ruling six million people.
Many groups within the empire resented Aztec rule and the requirement to pay tribute, and rebellions were common.
