Mahatma Gandhi, born on October 2, 1869 in India, was one of the most influential leaders of Indian independence from British rule and a global icon of non-violence and peaceful resistance.

MAHATMA GANDHI

Gandhi studied law in England and began his career as a lawyer, but soon developed a concern with colonial oppression in India. He led the Indian independence movement with methods of non violent disobedience and mass actions, such as hunger strikes.

The title "Mahatma" means "great soul" and was given to Gandhi. His vision was based on the principles of truth, non-violence, religious tolerance and equality. He fought for unity between Hindus and Muslims, promoting peaceful coexistence.

Gandhi led India to its independence in 1947. He was assassinated in 1948 by a Hindu extremist.

Nelson Mandela was a South African leader, known for fighting against apartheid, a system of racial segregation in South Africa. Born in 1918, Mandela dedicated his life to the fight for equality and justice. He was imprisoned for 27 years because of his opposition to the segregationist regime, but has become a symbol of peaceful resistance.

In 1994, he became South Africa's first black president. His presidency was characterized by reconciliation and building a new nation based on principles of equality and democracy.
