I felt that a jigsaw puzzle quiz was fitting for the asssessment assignment. I feel that it is important to incorporate all four types of assessment into teaching depending on when it might be necessary. For example, screening assessments are necessary at the begininning of the year while outocome assessments would be used at the end of a unit. In my school, we use an i-ready assessment within the first two weeks of school. This is helpful because I know very little about my students reading abilities when they first come to me. Progress monitoring assessments should be ongoing throughout the school year. In my own classroom, progess monitoring allows me to change my instruction based on what the studnts have learned and still need to learn. Diagnostic asssessments should be used for students who might be in need of tier 2 and tier 3 instruction.. Reading Rockets states, "No single assessment will provide insight into all of the reading-related skills that students need to learn." (Assessment: Introduction | Reading Rockets.)

I found it surprising that 65% of U.S students are failing to achieve expected reading levels by fourth grade. As stated in Teaching all Children to Read, this lack of proficiency makes it even more necessary that teachers use assessment to drive instruction. (D Ray Reutzel, & Cooter, R. B., 2019). I was also surprised by the achievement gap statistics from the 2019 report cards. I am wondering what is the cause of the achievement gaps in the first place? Other than assessing students and using assessment to make instructional decisions, are there other ways to work on closing the gap? I work in an urban school district and find that it is difficult to motivate students to care about their test scores and report card grades.
