Engage locking devices

Chose correct ladder for job

Follow the 4-to-1 rule for straight ladders and extension ladders. For every 4 feet of the ladder’s length from the ground to its top support, position the ladder out 1 foot from the wall. e.g., a 16' ladder will need 4' between the wall and the base of the ladder.

Position the ladder on a firm, level surface. Secure and stabilize the ladder to prevent it from moving while in use.

Don't use a metal ladder if you're working near sources of electricity (choose fiberglass or wood instead).

Extend the side rails of a straight ladder or extension ladder at least three feet above the roof line to keep the ladder stable when it is used to access an upper landing surface.

03

Engage locking devices

Make sure spreaders and locking devices on stepstools, step ladders, or combination ladders are properly engaged. Never step on the top two steps of a step ladder.

If you’re in a high traffic area, or if the ladder itself could create a hazard for others, put up a temporary barricade, like cones or caution tape, to keep others away from the ladder while in use.

Select a ladder having a load rating high enough to support you and your tools. If the ladder has a safety label, check it for the ladder’s duty rating and other important information.
