St Andrew's Eve

St. Andrews Eve is celebrated on November 29-30. On this day, people have fun by pouring wax into a keyhole or looking for the name of a loved one on a paper heart. The Andrews Day tradition also is put shoes in a row, which means that the first shoe of the person that touches the wall will be the first to get married. Here is link to see how Poles celebrate St Andrew's Day

In Poland we celebrate Christmas Eve on December 24 and it is the day before Chrirstmas .The most important moment of this day is Christmas Eve dinner with the family, which begins after dusk when the first star appears in the sky. Dinner begins with prayer and reading a fragment of the Bible about the birth of Jesus . Then family members share the Christmas wafer and wish each other. Accordingto tradition, there should be 12 Lenten dishes on the Christmas Eve table. The most popular Christmas Eve dish in Poland is: borscht with dumplings, mushroom soup, carp, dumplings with cabbage and mushrooms, cabbage with peas, dumplings with poppy seeds, kutia, poppy seed cake and gingerbread. After Christmas Eve dinner many Poles go to church for Midnight Mass. An important custom is singing carols and decorating a chrismas tree under gifts are placed for loved ones, brought by a star or Santa Claus. Christmas Eve in Poland is a very family holiday.

All Saints’ Day is a Polish holiday and day off from work and school. We celebrate it on the first of November. That day we go to the graveyard and we think about our relatives who are dead. We light candles and put flowers on the graves. A lot of people meet their family to reminisce and pray. People often go to other cities to the graveyards because their relatives are buried there.

Three Kings' Day (Epiphany)

The feast of the Three Kings is celebrated on January 6. This day is free from work and study. In Poland on the door, we write with a chalk: K+M+B. It is an abbreviation for Kacper+Melchior+Baltazar. This gesture symbolizes blessing. On this day we also go to church. In Poland this feast is also called Epiphany Day. In Polish cities parades are held with Three Kings' Cavalcades.
