Early Exploration

The Treaty of Tordesillas

Magellan's voyage was super important because he found an entire ocean (the Pacific Ocean) that the Europeans never realized was there and increased the geographic knowledge of Europeans allowing them to make more accurate maps. Even if he didn't make it all the way around the globe.

De Soto took Native Americans captive as he moved along and used them as guides. He died in 1542 of a fever and was buried in the Mississippi River. His crew went back to Mexico.

Magellan’s fleet set sail from Spain in 1519. By 1520 they made it to the Philippine archipelago landing on the island of Cebu, where Magellan befriended the locals and, struck with a sudden religious zeal, sought to convert them to Christianity. Magellan was now closer than ever to reaching the Spice Islands, but when the Cebu asked for his help in fighting their neighbors on the island of Mactan, Magellan agreed. He assumed he would command a swift victory with his superior European weapons, and against the advice of his men, Magellan himself led the attack. The Mactanese fought fiercely, and Magellan fell when he was shot with a poison arrow. Ferdinand Magellan died on April 27, 1521.

I am Pope Alexander VI. I am from Spain and when Columbus claimed the New World he found for Spain I stepped in to make sure that no other country could claim the New World. I created the Line of Tordesillas to separate what Spain and what Portugal could have. It would have worked but no other country listened to me and France and England went ahead and claimed parts of the New World any way.

I am Manuel the I of Portugal - I became King in 1495. I became uber rich once da Gama set up a maritime trade route to India. I also sent explorers to the New World and founded a colony in Brazil - this is one of the reasons the Treaty of Tordesillas was established.

I was the grandson of Ferdinand and Isabella and started my time as a monarch as King of Spain, in 1519 (when I was 18) I became the Holy Roman Emperor (then I became Charles V). When Magellan asked me to support his voyage to find India I was all for it and gave him everything he needed. Spices were the rage and were the most valuable things to Europeans at the time and I wanted to get my hands on some!

Charles I of Spain

Columbus was originally sailing for India. Contrary to popular belief Columbus knew the world wasn't flat so he knew he wasn't going to sail off the edge of the world. His plan was to sail West and get to India that way. What he didn't know was that there was a gigantic continent in the way - two actually North America and South America.

After we united Spain under Catholicism through the Reconquista we turned our attention to building wealth. We hired Columbus to find a direct route to Asia so we could trade with them without having to go through the Italian Merchants. After he found a whole new world we wanted Gold so we sent him a bunch more times.
