...I'm talking about the five steps of a "thematic process."
- CONSIDERATION
- CONSTRUCTION
- CURATION
- CONSUMMATION
- CONTEMPLATION
...Not diamonds or credit...Education? Okay, sure...but really...
We're librarians. We KNOW curation. However, just in case you need a reminder, you can and should: locate and integrate a veritable menagerie of items, including but not limited to books, aesthetics and visual aids, hands-on materials, technological/digital media and programs, and more. The key is ascertaining the links between the theme and...well, everything else. It's not always as easy or as obvious as you might initially think. You just have to stick with it.
*It is entirely possible to change up the order between these two steps, depending on preference and what works best for you, your students, and your library program.

Consideration
Yay! Congratulations! You did the thing and you deserve a major award! Oh, wait...you've completed the PREPARATION. You've still got to implement your plans and begin the YEAR-LONG project. Will it be an experience that's "lit?" Maybe. You can and should: remember that even the best-laid plans can be a little...fra-GI-le, whether they're Italian or not. Just make sure that nobody uses up all the glue on purpse.
Consideration involves evaluating various ideas in order to determine their thematic potential. You can and should: invite your students to suggest possible concepts; ask for your colleagues' insights; determine possibilities for making connections (the more, the better).
Construction is precisely what you'd expect: putting things together and building out your year. You can and should: focus on and engage in advance planning; decide which areas--either curricular or theme-related--to include, and when; create an organizational framework via which you can share and continually develop the theme.
Okay, NOW you've reached the end of the process, right? WRONG! You can and should: be a reflective practitioner of your art and craft. I know...I'm preaching to the choir. However, it's crucial and imperative that we think about what's been effective and what has not worked as well as we would have liked. You can and should: revel in your successes; learn from your mistakes; try, try, again, because nowadays, in schools beset by testing and scripted curricula, the library is often the last bastion of creativity; go forth and be fierce.
The 5 Cs, Explained
about what's on

After a "gap year," during which I thought often about how well things had gone while we were involved in our "resilience project" the year before, I realized that I should endeavor to employ a theme again. So, what would it be?

...also the potential for finding oneself on the front page of the small local paper.
vs
- More Planning and Effort at the Outset
- Difficulty Locating Books/Materials That Relate (Depending on Theme)
- May Be Different Than What's Expected/Typical
- Things May Change. Be ready to pivot.
- Customization (Student Input, Personal Interests, Variety in Choices of Book and Materials)
- Connections Between Genres and Across Subjects
- Potential for Deeper, More Meaningful Learning Experiences
The Good, the Bad, and the...well, that's it.
