The world's seventh continent

1.8 trillion pieces of floating plastic

Plastic Island in the Pacific

It all began in 1977 when Charles Moore, captain and oceanographer, was returning with his boat from a trip and saw a sea of plastic so large that it took him seven days to cross it. This was an eye-opener for ocean pollution and from then on, research and concern began.

Microplastics

  • Toothpastes;
  • Facial and body scrubs;
  • Creams and lotions;
  • Shampoos and laundry detergents;
  • Eye shadows, air fresheners and ;
  • Wipes.

This plastic island is 1.6 million km2, which is equivalent to 3 times the size of France. The oldest objects date back to 1977 and 46% of the total mass is made up of fishing nets.

Curiosities

Main causes of the plastic island

Our health is also greatly damaged by this accumulation of ocean garbage. The microplastics ingested by fish and other species that are part of our diet pass into our bodies via the food chain.

Consequenses

Thousands of marine mammals and aquatic birds also die every year from mistaking the plastic from the Pacific garbage patch for food or getting caught in nets abandoned at sea.

Ocean pollution and warned that plastic will invade every square inch of beaches in the future.
