Operation Torch -1942First mass involvement of U.S. troops in Europe. Allied invasion of North Africa to fight German & Italian troops. Started on November 8, 1942 with landings in Algeria and Morocco (Patton). By May 1942 the Axis forces surrendered or left North Africa. Vital for the Allies.
Saving Private Ryan - Shows the horrors and humanity of war. Begins with D-Day landings of U.S. Army on Omaha Beach.
Tom Hanks. Ever heard of him? Here is a movie trailer for a film done recently about the Battle of the Atlantic. Check it out!
Tuskegee Airmen or the Red Tails as they became known. Group of African American military pilots and airmen who fought in World War II. Completely segregated unit that worked out of the Mediterranean and eventually Italy escorting heavy bombers into Germany. The Red Tails were favorites of bomber pilots since they protected them so well.
May 7th, 1945 Germans surrender on all fronts. Hitler had killed himself on April 30, 1945 as Berlin was under siege by the Soviet Red Army. May 8 would be celebrated as Victory in Europe Day throughout the allied world (U.S.S.R on May 9th).
End of European War
Battle of Berlin in Color
- Celebrations throughout the Allied nations.
- Famous photo here taken in New York.
- War still raging in the Pacific.
Island Hopping Strategy - to capture islands that could support an airfield rather than engage in combat on Japanese-controlled islands. To preserve as many troops as possible but even this strategy cost thousands of lives. It was a slow process to fight through the jungle terrain on these islands.
Italian Campaign - 1943Invasion by the Allies that began in Sicily against Italian & German forces in 1943. Lasts until 1945. Seen by the Allies as platform to attack enemy territory in Europe and help divert German resources from the Eastern Front. In July of 1943, Mussolini is arrested by the Italians. Germany has to take on more defense.
the Thin Red Line - based on the novel written by James Jones who had fought at Guadalcanal and been at Pearl Harbor when it was attacked. Shows the complex nature of war and what are we as human beings. Also features the unique challenges of fighting wars on Pacific Islands.
Battle of the Bulge - December 1944 - January 1945. Last-ditched German counter attack in the Ardennes Forest in Belgium in December of 1944. U.S. troops held out and eventually the Germans failed after a month.
Dropping the Atomic Bomb - After planning for the invasion of mainland Japan and estimating Allied solider casualties after seeing the fighting on Okinawa, Harry Truman makes a decision (some historians believe it was to show the Soviets the power the U.S. now had). He gives Japan a chance to surrender or face the consequences. Japan does not surrender and the rest is history. One bomb is dropped on August 6 on Hiroshima and then again on August 9 on Nagasaki. Japan announced surrender on Aug. 15.
Battle of Stalingrad - Russia v Nazi Germany and the Axis powers. One of the largest, longest, and bloodiest engagements in modern warfare: From August 1942 through February 1943. Nearly two million people were killed or injured, including tens of thousands of Russian civilians. Russian victory ultimately turned the tide of World War II in favor of the Allied forces.
Midway - turning point for the Allies in the Pacific. They broke the Japanese code and figured out the Japanese planned to attack Midway and on what days. The U.S. Fleet hid and then pummeled the Japanese who lost 3 out of 4 carriers and 3,057 men.
D- Day - Operation Overlord - June 6, 1944 - The Allied invasion of occupied France. The largest amphibious assault ever undertaken. Had been planned for over a year. Opened up a two front war for the Germans on the European continent. General Eisenhower was the Supreme Allied Commander.
Battle of the Atlantic - Allied Shipping convoys brining material to England and points beyond up against German U-Boat Wolfpacks in the Atlantic Ocean. Longest continuous military campaign in World War II from 1939-1945. The height of the conflict was 1942-1943. 3,500 allied merchant ships (14.5 million gross tons of goods) and 175 Allied warships were sunk. 72,200 Allied naval and merchant seamen lost their lives. Germans lost 783 U-boats and 30,000 out of 40,000 submarine force.
Band of Brothers - Follow the men of Easy Company 506th Infantry Regiment of the 101st Airborne Division from training in Georgia all the way to Bavaria. See how bonds are formed and the toll war takes on each of them. From Normandy, to Market Garden, to the Battle of the Bulge.
Enemy at the Gates - A movie about Stalingrad and the battle to keep fighting. The Ed Harris German sniper is made up but Jude Law's character was a real Russian sniper.
