What are the learning goals for your breakout?

  • Which high-priority objectives will you cover?
  • Is this to review or to learn new content?
  • Look at an upcoming unit to plan your activity!

What else should you consider?

What are your expectations during the activity? How will students collaborate? How will you group students?

What supports will you include to ensure student learning and success?

Explore templates and designs and consider what students might need to be successful during a breakout activity. How will you help those who struggle with the challenge? What audio and visual supports will students need? How to you encourage productive struggle instead of frustration?

  • Does it all play back to your theme/story?
  • Do your clues lead them to unlock and escape? (Or does a clue lead to a clue that leads to an unlock?)
  • Open a browser in incognito mode (IE: InPrivate mode). Does everything work when you’re not logged in? (If not, change sharing settings to (anyone with link can view.)
  • Did you make your locks?
  • Did you publish your site?
  • Did you go through it yourself to check it all?

Critical Thinking: Digital breakouts encourage critical thinking and problem-solving. Puzzles and challenges require students to think creatively and analytically.Application of Knowledge: Students apply what they've learned in a practical context, reinforcing their understanding of the subject matter.

Problem Solving & Critical Thinking

Digital breakouts can serve as formative or summative assessments, evaluating students' problem-solving skills and teamwork abilities. They provide insights into student comprehension and application of concepts.

Assessment & Evaluation

This is where you get to be CREATIVE! A great escape room will have a fun backstory that will hook the reader. Come up with a story that grants a purpose to the challenge of the escape room activity. There are tons of AI tools can be very helpful when looking for ideas for stories and themes.

2

Create your theme

Collaboration: These experiences promote collaboration and teamwork, as participants often need to work together to solve puzzles and unlock clues.Communication Skills: Students develop effective communication skills as they share ideas and work towards a common goal.

Collaboration & Communication

Just like with every assignment you create, the first step is to begin with the end in mind and decide which skills you would like to assess using the escape room.

  • What objective(s) will be the focus of your activity?
  • What is the purpose of the breakout?
  • What do you want students to be able to do?
  • Is this for a review or new learning?

Choose Objectives

3

Brainstorm questions & activities

Start by designing four to six tasks targeting specific skills. For example, in an escape room focused on literary devices, you could use exercises like cloze passages, matching, and close reading. Don't worry about keys for locks at this stage, just create skill-targeted tasks.

  • Diversify the activities for varied challenges.
  • Consider what questions you want students to answer and what existing resources can be adapted for these topics.
  • Any resource can be adapted for a Breakout with innovative thinking.

Customization: Educators can tailor digital breakouts to specific content or learning objectives, making them versatile for various subjects and age groups.Adaptability: Digital breakouts can be modified to suit different learning scenarios, from elementary school to higher education.

Customization & Adaptability

Introduction to New Material: Digital breakouts can pique students' interest and curiosity, creating a strong foundation for introducing new topics.Review and Reinforcement: Digital breakouts can be used for reviewing and reinforcing previously taught concepts, helping students consolidate their knowledge. They provide an engaging alternative to traditional review sessions.

Introduce, Review & Reinforce

Digital breakouts are highly engaging and motivate students through the excitement of solving puzzles and "escaping" from challenging situations. Immersive Learning: Students are immersed in the learning experience, making it more memorable and enjoyable.

Engagement & Motivation

Compile all of the needed activties and documents in the platform(s) of your choice. You can use Genially, Google Sites, Canvas, etc. to house your resources in one easy-to-access location. These tools allow you to embed multiple resources from a variety of platforms.

5

Build your site

  • In Genially, use password protected pages to require students to complete one task before starting another.

  • If including Google forms in your breakout, you would want to use response validation in your answer key to create the locks and to give students a way to self check their work.

Decide what you want your rooms & locks to be, then write your clues. These codes can include anything you want— numbers, letters, words, symbols, etc., depending on the platforms you are using. Get creative with it! Examples: Use response validation (Google Forms) and/or passwords in Genially to require students to respond correctly before moving on.

Riddles

Use matching activities with the letters in order to be the code for the room.

Have students fill in the blanks of a text. Use the first letter of the word in each blank, in order, to create your code, or attach other letter/number codes to each of the words. Could be a draggable activity in genially as well.

Up the challenge by creating rigorous riddles to solve.

Have students answer a series of questions, and write the letter choice of the answers to get their code. You can even change the letters of the answer choices so that you can create a word that fits with your theme or add an additional puzzle to solve.

You can attach numbers, letters, or other symbols to different "cards" that students can sort. Have them use the numbers from a certain category in order to get their code.

Use academic vocabulary terms to create codes relevant to your subject.

Add questions to a page, then cut it up into individual images to move it around. Require that students put the puzzle together, then they will read and answer the questions for the code.
