The Ming Dynasty's economy was mostly dependent on a system called the Single Whip Taxation System. The single whip taxation system was created because of a shortage of copper coins in the Ming Dynasty. Tax was collected in hard currency. Because of the falsification of records by local landholders the Ming policy starting in 1522, was now known as saying that people had to pay labor tax in the form of silver.
