Practical Nursing Program

Orienation Challenge

"In previous terms, we did not have an interactive online module for students to complete for their clinical course – it was independent review with audio however we were not tracking whether students have reviewed pre-clinical orientation documents or not. We also used to get many questions regarding clinical preparation because students were not reading the orientation info."

Total of 7 interactives

  • Clinical Orientation PN Semester 3
  • Clinical Orientation PN Semester 4
  • Pathology PATH1016 - Fluids Electrolytes
  • Heart And Neck Vessels - Part 1, 2 and 3

From PPTX audio to interactive h5Ps

+ info

This term with the addition of the H5P interactive orientation online module, with a “test your knowledge” submission at the end, we are able to track students’ completion with a grade assigned (to ensure that they have reviewed the orientation info). We have a 71% completion rate this term, and hope to increase that value to 100% because students need to complete this module before they attend clinical. This term, our emails and questions regarding clinical preparation has decreased as the information is communicated to them in several ways:

  • Online H5P module
  • Clinical orientation session (virtual meeting)
We talked about adding more questions and hope that the Spring term, we reach the 100% goal (+/- those students who withdraw during the first 2 weeks of the term).

Self-learning module

Faculty used to use Storyline (Sample) to create her interactive module but this time, she would like to try using H5P to achieve the similar result. Questions: Can H5P do the same thing with Storyline? What kind of interactives we can add to the module?

AccordionsThere are two format options available using Accordions:

  • Numbered accordions
  • Unnumbered accordions

1. Numbered AccordionsNumbered accordions are useful when you need to present learners with a set number of items in the list, for example, the top five Ben and Jerry's flavours of the year.

2. Unnumbered AccordionsUnnumbered accordions are useful when the number or order of closely related items is not a point of focus, for example, classic types of ice cream sundaes.

Accordions Best PracticesAn accordion is basically an interactive list. Presenting content in an accordion can have the same benefits as organizing content in a list, with some added benefits. How Accordions Support LearningWhen used appropriately, accordions can actually support the learning process. The following outline a few of the ways accordions can improve the way learner consume content.

Tabs

There are two format options available using Tabs:

  • Horizontal tabs
  • Vertical tabs

1. Horizontal TabsHorizontal accordions provide more horizontal content space, however, don't create more than six horizontal tabs. They won't display well. If you need more than 6 tabs, choose vertical tabs instead. 2. Vertical TabsVertical tabs provide less content space, but can accommodate more tabs.

You will need to login to D2L community page.

Flip cards

Think of flip cards like items that belong in the same group that can be laid out at random without impacting meaning. Flip cards are an especially engaging choice when you can incorporate images.

Hotspots

The Hotspot Element lets you create an interactive image on a course page. This image can be configured with up to nine “hotspot” markers, which learners can select to access additional information.

Carousel

A Carousel is like a mini slide show that can be embedded right into your course page. Each Carousel slide can display an image and text. Learners have the option of progressing to the next slide in the Carousel or going back to view a previous slide. A major benefit of a Carousel is the ability to prominently display an image. This is different from an Accordion or Tabs, which is more focused on text. Since images are so important, you should always ensure alt text is applied so visuals are accessible.
